Trail Markings

The trails will be marked in two ways.  At road intersections & on private property the trail will be marked with spray painted arrows pointing you in the right direction.

Deeper in the woods on the trails the course will be marked with utility marking flags.

  • The marking flags will always begin with a white flag and end with a white flag.
  • In between the white flags you will find colored flags.  Each color represents a different course.  For example, Red = 5 K, Green = 8 M & Blue = 25 K.
  • All flags guiding your way will always be on your right.
  • If you see flags on your left that means it is on an out and back section of the course and eventually these flags will be on your right on your way back to the finish.
  • Finally at all major turn off's for distinct distances we will also have arrows and distances marked to tell you which way to go!
Please see illustrations below!

Race Course Descriptions

5 K Course

Leaving the lower parking lot from Mohican Resort, we will cruise down Lodge Road until the Utility Plant Access Road.  We will turn left onto the access road for a short distance until it intersects with the horse trail at the end of the guard rail.  From there the trail will dart to the right following the flank of Lodge Road and into the Forest.  This trail is known as the Lodge Loop Horse/ Hiking Trail.

At the loop turn off we will have a course volunteer guiding traffic.  The 5 K & 25 K racers will be taking the loop trail through Fern Hollow back to the start of the course while the 8 Mile racers will be continuing past the Loop turn off to continue on the horse trail further into the forest.

For the 5 K racers, the Lodge Loop trail will guide you through some cliff outcroppings and now that the leaves have begun to fall, you will see some great views of Pleasant Hill Lake.  Remember to Leave No Trace when you are running through Fern Hollow as this is an area of endangered ferns native to the Mohican Region.

8 Mile Course

A little further down the trail the 8 Mile racers will cross the first road.  At this intersection, you will find the first aide station.  Our volunteers will guide you to veer up the road to your left and begin your journey deeper into the forest.  This is the horse/ hiking access road/ trail that will take you above both Little and Big Lyons Falls.

This trail will be a combination of gas line access roads and horse trail.  Once you get near the top of Big Lyons Falls continue on the upper trail (trails sections to the right) into the Mcfadden Farm Easement section of the trail.  Once through the easement you will climb the hills and descend once again to a wooden bridge and split rail fence.  Once over the bridge follow the trail to your right up the sandstone trail.  After another long climb you will be into a section of the forest that will change into White Pine.  Remember to look behind you as this trail will have some great views of the lake above the dam.

Once the single track horse trail opens back up into gas line access roads, you will continue on this trail until you will see the second gas access road to your left.  This is where the 8 mile will turn off and the 25 K runners will continue on their journey deeper into the woods.  The 8 mile folks will take the gas access trail for a short distance until they will take an immediate left onto the mountain bike trail.  8 Mile runners will follow the mountain bike trail until it bisects the Covered Bridge Road.  At this intersection the runners will take an immediate left onto the Covered Bridge Road where they will see another aide station.  This aide station will be set up at the Covered Bridge Trail Kiosk.  From here the runners will take the trail along the left side of the river as you head back towards the dam.  This is the trail that will take you to the base of Big Lyons Falls.

** Do Not Take STAGECOACH **

Follow the Big Lyons Falls trail to the top of the falls.  For those who have not been in the forest for a while you will find a great surprise at the base of the falls.  Use the surprise to get to the top of the falls trail.  Take the trail to the top of Little Lyon's Falls.  Please be aware that the trail above Little Lyon's Falls takes you within 10 yards of a cliff edge.

Follow Little Lyons Falls trail to the dam.  At the dam, you will take an immediate left and follow the dam road around a few curves until you will dart into the woods just past the guard rails to your right.  This is a fisherman's trail that is not an official trail in the park.  You will follow this trail into the woods until it intersects with the Lodge Loop trail that the 5 K racers just completed.  At this intersection you will see a yellow post.  Take a right (almost straight) there to follow the trail back to the race start.

25 K

The 25 K racers will go back towards the race start where they will be guided with arrows to take a left into the woods onto Camp Nuhop's property.  From there the racers will follow the arrows and flags through Camp Nuhop up a few climbs until they will reach the border of Pleasant Hill Outdoor Center.  This trail will take racers through Pleasant Hill Outdoor Center's property on forest access roads and single track trails.  This trail will meet up with the Lodge Road and Dam Road intersections where runners will climb the road to their first aide station.

Our volunteers will guide you to  turn right and begin your journey deeper into the forest.

Once the single track horse trail opens back up into gas line access roads, you will continue on this trail   Around this area the 8 mile runners will turn off and the 25 K runners will continue on their journey deeper into the woods.  The 25 K runners will take the Gas access road until in descends into the valley.  Once into the bottom of the valley, the road will begin to climb again.  Once runners begin to ascend the road they will take a left onto the Mountain Bike Trail.  You will see a white PVC Pipe Trail Marker at this intersection.  At this point runners will follow the Mountain Bike Trail until they come to their next paved road crossing.  At this road crossing the runners will cross the road back onto the Mountain Bike Trail.  Runners will follow the Mountain Bike Trail to they come to another Paved Road Crossing.  Again continue across the road back onto the Mountain Bike Trail.  Follow the MTN Bike Trail until your get near the Fire Tower.  At the Fire Tower you will come to the next Aide Station.  From here the volunteer will guide you to take the Hog Hollow Trail down to the covered bridge.  Please realize that there are many gas line roads that intersect the Hog Hollow Trail.  So it is important here to follow the flags on the course.  Once at the Covered Bridge Parking area runners will take an immediate right onto the Covered Bridge Road where they will see another aide station.  This aide station will be set up at the Covered Bridge Trail Kiosk.  From here the runners will take the trail along the left side of the river as you head back towards the dam.  This is the trail that will take you to the base of Big Lyons Falls.

A portion of the proceeds will benefit Camp Nuhop - a residential summer camp for all children with learning disabilities, attention deficit disorders and behavior disorders. What started out as a one-week program years ago with eight counselors serving 27 children has blossomed into a camp that serves 500 children during six weeks.
